IIT Madras is organising the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. The revised information brochure (dated 27 September 2026) has extended the application dates: the regular period now closes on 5 October 2026, and applications with a late fee are accepted until 12 October 2026. The computer-based exam will be held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, and results will be announced on 19 March 2027.
GATE scores are used for M.Tech/ME, MS and PhD admissions with scholarship at IITs, IISc, NITs and other institutes, and for recruitment by many PSUs such as NTPC, IOCL, ONGC, BHEL, GAIL and POWERGRID. There is no age limit, and students in the third year of a bachelor’s degree can apply. GATE 2027 has 30 papers, including a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper, and the syllabus has been revised.

GATE Score and Qualifying Marks
- Qualifying marks (General) = max(25, min(40, mean + standard deviation)) of all candidates in the paper.
- OBC-NCL/EWS: 90% of the General cut-off; SC/ST/PwD: two-thirds of the General cut-off.
- The GATE score runs from 350 (at the qualifying mark) to 900 (at the average of the top 0.1% or top 10). Multi-session papers use normalised marks.
Uses of GATE 2027
- Higher studies: M.Tech/ME/MS and direct PhD admissions with MoE scholarship at IITs, IISc, NITs and other centrally funded institutes (minimum 70% weightage to GATE as per MoE guidelines).
- PSU jobs: PSUs that have used GATE scores include AAI, BHEL, BSNL, Coal India, CRIS, DVC, ECIL, EIL, GAIL, GRID-India, IOCL, MDSL, NALCO, NHAI, NMDC, NLCIL, NPCIL, NTPC, ONGC, POWERGRID, RINL and SAIL.
- Central government: Group-A posts such as Senior Field Officer and Senior Research Officer in the Cabinet Secretariat.
Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, scholarship or a job — each institute or employer runs its own selection.
