IIT Kharagpur is the organising institute for the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) 2027. Through JAM, graduates get admission to about 3,000 seats in M.Sc., M.Sc. (Tech), MS (Research), Joint M.Sc.–Ph.D., M.Sc.–Ph.D. dual degree and Integrated Ph.D. programmes at 23 IITs. Another 2,000+ seats at IISc, NITs, IISER Pune, IISER Bhopal, IIEST Shibpur and other centrally funded institutes are filled through CCMN counselling using JAM scores.

Online applications are open from 5 September to 12 October 2026 on the JOAPS portal. The computer-based test will be held on Sunday, 14 February 2027, in two sessions. Pay online by net banking, debit/credit card, UPI or wallet. The fee is non-refundable. After admission offers, a separate seat booking fee applies: ₹15,000 (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) or ₹7,500 (SC/ST/PwD), adjusted against the institute fee.

You can take one or two papers, but two papers only if they are in different sessions (for example MA in the morning and PH in the afternoon). PwD candidates get one hour of compensatory time per paper.

A virtual on-screen calculator is provided — your own calculator is not allowed. Numerical answers are entered with a virtual keypad. A mock test and previous years’ papers are available on the JAM website.

Eligibility

  • Candidates who have completed a bachelor’s degree, or are in the final year and will appear in the final exam in 2027, can take JAM 2027.
  • No age limit, and the exam is open to Indian and foreign nationals.
  • For admission, the degree must be completed before the admitting institute’s admission date, and each programme has its own Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) — usually the main subject for 2–3 years of the bachelor’s degree, with mathematics for some programmes. Many Physics and Mathematics programmes have “no restrictions for engineering degrees”.
  • Admission is based on All India Rank in the relevant paper, the Government of India reservation policy and seat availability. There is no extra interview or written test.

You choose three cities; once the first is chosen, the second and third must be from the same zone.

How to Apply for IIT JAM 2027

  1. Go to jam.iitkgp.ac.in and register on JOAPS with your name, email, mobile and a password. Note the Enrolment ID sent to you.
  2. Fill in personal details, address, degree and college details, test paper(s) and three exam cities. Your name must match your qualifying degree exactly, with no prefix such as Mr/Ms.
  3. Upload your Class 10 mark sheet (date of birth proof), photo ID details, and category/PwD certificates if applicable (PDF, 10–300 KB). OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be issued on or after 1 April 2026.
  4. Upload a recent colour photograph (JPG, 20–200 KB, between 240×320 and 480×640 pixels, light background, face covering at least half the photo) and a signature in black or dark blue ink (JPG, 10–150 KB, between 280×80 and 560×160 pixels; not in capital letters).
  5. Click “Save and View”, check everything, then “Proceed for Payment” — no changes are possible after this.
  6. Pay the fee by 12 October 2026. If the payment does not show, check again after an hour before paying again.
  7. Track the application status (accepted / defect marked) on JOAPS and fix any defect within the given time.

On Exam Day

  • Carry a printout of the admit card (colour preferred) and the original photo ID given in the form (Aadhaar, driving licence, PAN, passport or voter ID).
  • Mobile phones, smart watches, calculators and other electronic devices are not allowed.
  • Fingerprints or photographs may be taken — avoid mehndi, ink or tattoo on the fingertips.
  • Keep the admit card safe; admitting institutes may ask for it.
